RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) and Inkless Tales announce new partnership

NEW HAMPTON, N.Y. – December, 2007 – At the request of Washington, D.C.-based literacy pioneer Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. (RIF), children’s web site Inkless Tales has become a content partner in their newest web initiative, “Leading to Reading,” targeted to younger audiences: five years old and under.

RIF, the nation’s oldest and largest children’s and family literacy organization, is using original material from author/illustrator Elizabeth Bushey’s popular web site Inkless Tales, at www.inklesstales.com. Based in New Hampton, N.Y., Inkless Tales offers stories, poems, music and other interactive learning games, including an Animated Alphabet and a Mathematical Mother Goose.

The massive Inkless Tales site is linked to hundreds of schools, libraries and museums worldwide, and receives over half a million hits per month. Inkless Tales has been placed on the prestigious American Library Association’s “Great Sites for Kids,” and is shortlisted by the Encyclopedia Britannica’s less than 600 “World’s Best Web Sites,” available exclusively to subscribers. The Internet Public Library calls Inkless Tales an “amazing site.”

The entire content of Inkless Tales is created and maintained by a single person: Elizabeth Bushey, former journalist, web developer and mother of two.

“I remember RIF from my own childhood,” says Ms. Bushey. “I was very excited when they approached me–almost as excited as my daughters were. RIF is a part of their childhood, too.”

RIF encourages children to read by delivering free books and literacy resources to those children and families who need them most.
Founded in 1966, RIF is the oldest and largest children’s and family nonprofit literacy organization in the United States. RIF’s highest priority is reaching underserved children from birth to age 8. Through community volunteers in every state and U.S. territory, RIF provides 4.5 million children with 16 million new, free books and literacy resources each year.

Children’s Web site InklessTales.com hits million mark

Summary: InklessTales.com, a children's web site featuring an animated alphabet and a mathematical Mother Goose, among other learning activities, poems and stories, has reached the milestone one million hit mark. Created single-handedly by one working mother, it's achieved accolades from such big names as the American Library Association and the Internet Public Library. —

MIDDLETOWN, NY– Inkless Tales, the web site for children ages four to eight offering games, stories, poems, and other learning activities, reached the milestone one million hits this month this April 2006, announced site owner Elizabeth Bushey today.

The site, which also includes an Animated Alphabet and a Mathematical Mother Goose, features content created entirely by a single person. “I illustrate, I write, and I do all the programming, too,” says Bushey, who works from her home, and, until three weeks ago, worked full-time, as well.

Inkless Tales has earned accolades from big names such as the American Library Association, which listed the site among Harry Potter and Lemony Snicket on its “Great Sites for Kids” pages. The ALA called Inkless Tales “entertaining… and easy to navigate.” The Internet Public Library called it “an amazing site.”

Bushey says she’s surprised but delighted about the million hit mark. “I made what I like, and I’m glad they like it too,” she says. Libraries and school systems visit and link from all over the United States and from all over the world: Inkless Tales is even listed on the Hong Kong Public Library site.

The site is experiencing a real boom. The traffic statistics are showing a consistent growth rate between 30 and 45 percent each month.

“Growth is exciting,” says Bushey. “But the best part is when I hear from a kid at the feedback form who loves the site.”

Elizabeth Bushey is a freelance writer, illustrator and web developer. She is a former columnist for the Times Herald-Record, and an adjunct instructor teaching journalism at Orange County Community College. She is also a musician: Inkless Tales will release a first CD of lullabies this summer on an upcoming companion web site, www.InklessTunes.com.

Harry Potter, Lemony Snicket and… Inkless Tales?

American Library Association lists children’s web site Inkless Tales on Great Sites for Kids list among kids’ favorites

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y., March 30, 2005 – New York-based children’s web site Inkless Tales, offering poems, stories and learning games for four to eight-year-olds, was recently selected by the American Library Association for its prestigious “Great Sites for Kids” list, nestled alphabetically between such giants as Harry Potter and Lemony Snicket.

The site, produced independently by a full-time working mother of two, offers an Animated Alphabet and a Mathematical Mother Goose, among other features. The ALA calls the site “entertaining and educational,” and “easy to navigate.”

“That was the comment I appreciated the most,” says creator Elizabeth Bushey, a former newspaper columnist, illustrator and web programmer. “I hope everything on the site is easy to use. It’s not for nothing I have all these neighborhood kids in my house, testing all this stuff out!”

Bushey is pretty serious about web usability, having done professional testing at her current job at Orange County Community College, where she has been the web master.

Elizabeth Bushey is a writer, an illustrator, a musician and a web developer.

MIDDLETOWN, NY - Inkless Tales, a web site full of games, stories and poems designed for readers and would-be readers ages 4-8, is available on the Internet at www.inklesstales.com. The two-year-old site, designed, illustrated and programmed by Elizabeth Bushey, has just passed the 10,000-hit per month mark.

Bushey, a writer, illustrator and web developer, began the site as a project for fun and to entertain her own daughters, now aged five and eight.

Sheep"The web as a medium for children has just begun to be explored," says Bushey. "There's so much potential right now. Online picture books, read-aloud stories, songs, poems -- there's just no end to what can be done. Since my interests and abilities happen to be in these areas, it seemed like a good fit, so I put the site together and launched it."

"I love using the Web for two reasons," says Bushey. "The first is that children learn and absorb material in many different ways. Educators are learning more and more about multiple intelligences. Some are visual learners, others need to read to understand, others need to hear. While the Web will never replace books, it offers all of those possibilities for children. The second reason is, well, I can do all those things. I can write, I can draw, I can animate, I can sing and play music -- so it's fun for me to have a venue to do that."

Bushey, a longtime associate member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, naturally gravitated to the subject of children's literature. All of the content on the site is original, or adapted from nursery rhymes with original illustrations and animations.

Hey! Diddle Diddle"What really surprised me was how much traffic the site began to get," Bushey says. "When we blew through the 3,000-hit level last year, I was surprised. When we hit over 17,000 hits in May 2004, I was REALLY surprised."

The biggest surprise, though, came when she explored where those hits were coming from.

"They're coming from all over the place -- Georgia, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey -- that was nice to see. It was the large amount of international traffic that had me flabbergasted," she says. "I've got IP addresses from the Netherlands, from England, and Australia, among others."

Most of all, Bushey hopes her site -- which is free to the public, and contains no advertising -- encourages children and parents to read.
